珠宝用放大镜是一种最常用的宝玉石检测工具，它具有结构简单，操作方便，易于携带等优点。
关于珠宝用放大镜的倍率，有人以为越大越好，其实不然，因为从镜头制作上讲，超过10倍而又能保证其光学质量和通光口径（放大镜的通光口径，以16~20mm为宜）是非常困难的；其次，超过10倍的放大镜由于焦距太短也难以使用。而使用10倍放大镜时，固定物至镜头顶端的距离约25mm，是最适当的距离；若用20倍放大镜，则其物与镜的距离仅10mm，观察很不方便。鉴于以上原因故珠宝界均以10倍放大镜观察珠宝首饰。例如以10倍放大镜观察红、蓝宝石及翡翠玉镯，认为无裂纹而买下了该饰物，但买主后来又用20倍放大镜再看，发现饰物有微细裂纹或玉纹，则卖主可以认为该饰品并无问题。因为随着放大镜倍数的提高，则本来不成问题的微细裂纹或玉纹也会显露出来，对某些玉器来讲，更会是这样的。
